Here's everything you need to know about Father's Day 2015, including what date it falls on, why the date changes every year and the history of the day to spoil your dad.

When is Father's Day 2015?

This year, Father's Day falls on Sunday June, 21. That means you've got a few days to start planning what to buy.

Why does the date of Father's Day change every year?

There's no fixed date for Father's Day which means that the date changes every year.

Father's Day falls on the third Sunday of June.

Unlike Mother's Day which dates back hundreds of years, Father's Day is a more recent celebration.

Many historians believe that the celebration originated in the US, after Grace Golden Clayton founded it in West Virginia on July 5, 1908.

A year and a half before, a town nearby called Monogah had suffered a mine explosion which saw more than 360 men die, and over 200 of these were fathers who left behind widows and children.

Grace Golden Clayton was moved by this and saw her Pastor Reverend Robert Thomas Webb, and initiated the idea that there should be a special day dedicated to honoring fathers.

Clayton chose July 5, 1908 to celebrate Father's Day, as this was the nearest date to her late father's birthday. However, Clayton's Father's Day was unsuccessful as the day was not promoted outside of the town, no public statement was made to the City Council and more importantly, her town held a huge July 4, Independence day festival with over 12000 people in attendance the day before.

Because of this, other historians believe it was another American woman, Sonora Smart Dodd who initiated the Father's Day celebration.

Two years after Grace Golden Clayton's attempt to create Father's Day, Sonora Smart Dodd from Washington managed to get it recognised.

After hearing a Mother's Day sermon in church, Sonora Smart Dodd felt that fathers also deserved a day of being honoured. She had lost her mother at just 16 years old and was brought up, along with her five siblings, by her father.

She took her idea of Father's Day to her pastor Reverend Dr. Conrad Bluhm and he fully supported it.

Sonora Smart Dodd had originally wanted Father's Day to be celebrated on June, 5 her father's birthday, but the church felt they needed more time to prepare and June, 19 was chosen.
